Why “congratulations on the raise” fails
Because the CEO got forty of them in three days, all followed by a pitch. The pattern is so consistent that the phrase itself now triggers dismissal. Worse, it signals you found them on a funding database, which tells them the message is automated and untargeted.
The raise is still the best timing signal in B2B. It means budget exists, headcount is being added, and departments have new targets. The trick is to use the signal without announcing that you used it.
Template 1: the hiring consequence
Hi {first name}, saw {company} is hiring four SDRs this quarter. Ramping that many at once is usually where the process cracks, and it’s the bit I work on. Would be good to be connected.
Why it works: the hiring is a consequence of the raise, which means you’ve thought a step further than everyone else.
Template 2: the stage-specific problem
Hi {first name}, the jump from {previous stage} to {current stage} tends to break {specific thing} before anything else. I’ve watched a few teams through it. Happy to be connected in case it’s useful later.
Template 3: the useful thing
Hi {first name}, we put together what {sector} teams typically get wrong in the six months after a raise. It’s short and there’s nothing to buy. Want me to send it?
Template 4: the honest one
Hi {first name}, you’ve probably had forty of these since the announcement, so I’ll be different in one way only: I’m not going to pitch you now. I’ll connect, and if {problem area} becomes a priority in the next few months, I’ll be here.
Why it works: naming the thing everyone else is doing, then not doing it, is memorable. And it plays a longer game, which suits a company that just raised and is planning twelve months out.
Building the list
Funding announcements come from Crunchbase, Dealroom, Sifted, TechCrunch, Silicon Republic and the like. Pull the companies, then find the function head rather than the founder. Run the list through the ICP filter so you’re not messaging the ten out of forty who were never a fit, and let it write the opener from the profile.
Timing detail
Two to four weeks after the announcement is the window. Earlier and you’re in the noise. Much later and the budget conversations have happened without you.
