Connection request templates: marketing directors and CMOs

Marketing leaders write outreach for a living, which means they read yours as a professional. Generic copy does not just fail, it costs you credibility with the one audience that notices craft.

Paul CassidyBy Paul Cassidy, founder of Prospectio.ai. Ex Google, Salesforce and Twilio sales leader. Updated 5 September 2026.
In short: marketing leaders judge the craft, not just the offer. Reference a specific mechanic in something they published, be honest that you are selling, and keep it under 300 characters. Five worked examples below.

The problem with marketing as an audience

Every other function receives cold outreach and thinks about the offer. Marketing receives it and thinks about the execution. They notice the merge field that did not populate, the subject line formula, the fake personal touch, the sequence timing. You are being assessed on two things at once.

That is a problem if your outreach is average, and an advantage if it is not, because a well-written message to a marketing leader gets remarked upon in a way it never does elsewhere.

Template 1: the specific mechanic

Hi {first name}, the {campaign or content} you ran, specifically the choice to {specific mechanic}, was the interesting part. Most people would have done {obvious alternative}. I work on outbound and steal good ideas. Would be good to connect.

Why it works: naming the mechanic proves you understood the decision rather than just seeing the output. “I steal good ideas” is honest and disarming.

Template 2: the shared problem

Hi {first name}, we both spend our week trying to get busy people to reply to things. I run {five words}, and the state of B2B outreach right now is really bleak. Would be good to compare notes with someone on the other side of it.

Template 3: the honest sales note

Hi {first name}, you will spot this as outreach in about half a second, so: I build a tool for {specific job}, I think {company} is roughly the right shape for it, and I would like fifteen minutes. If not, connecting anyway because your {content} is good.

Why it works: transparency plus a specific compliment plus a small ask. Marketing leaders reward people who do not insult their intelligence.

Template 4: the hiring signal

Hi {first name}, saw you are hiring a demand gen manager. Usually means either the pipeline number went up or the last one left, and both are interesting problems. I work in that space. Happy to be a contact either way.

Template 5: the data offer

Hi {first name}, we looked at reply rates across roughly twelve thousand outbound campaigns and the results were not what I expected. Happy to send the summary, nothing to buy. Either way, good to connect.

Note: only use this if you actually have the data and will actually send it.

After they accept

A voice note works well here, partly because so few people send them that a marketing leader will be professionally curious about the format itself. Keep it to thirty seconds and lead with the specific reason you reached out to them.

What not to do

Do not open with a question you do not want answered. Do not use “quick question” when it is not. Do not attach a case study in the connection note. Do not use the word “journey”. And do not claim to have read something you have not, because this audience will ask you about it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is marketing a hard audience for cold outreach?

Because they can see the machinery. A marketing director recognises a merge field, a sequence step and a manufactured urgency line instantly, and judges you on the quality of the execution as much as the offer.

Should I compliment their campaign?

Only if you can be specific about why it worked. Vague praise reads as flattery-as-technique, which is worse than no compliment. Naming the actual mechanic is what lands.

CMO or demand gen lead?

Demand gen or growth leads own the day-to-day problem and the tooling budget below about €30k. The CMO comes in above that, or when it changes headcount.
