Message templates: after someone views your profile

A profile view is the weakest buying signal there is and the easiest to act on. Used well it produces conversations. Used badly it makes you look like you are watching people.

In short: only act on views from people who fit your ICP, mention it lightly or not at all, and lead with something useful. A view plus another signal is worth chasing. A view on its own usually is not.

When a profile view means something

On its own, very little. People view profiles for dozens of reasons that have nothing to do with buying: they saw your comment, they are hiring, they are being nosy about a mutual connection, they clicked by accident.

It becomes worth acting on when it comes with something else:

  • The viewer fits your ICP and works at a company you would target anyway
  • They viewed shortly after you published a post about their problem
  • They viewed more than once in a short window
  • Someone else at the same company viewed too, which often means an internal conversation is happening

That last one is the strongest signal on LinkedIn and almost nobody watches for it.

Template 1: light touch, no mention

Hi {first name}, your work at {company} on {specific area} overlaps with what I spend my time on. Would be good to be connected.

Never mentions the view at all. Highest acceptance rate of the four, because it reads as a normal request.

Template 2: the light acknowledgement

Hi {first name}, saw you passed through my profile. If you were looking for {thing you do}, happy to answer anything directly rather than make you dig. If it was accidental, no harm done.

Why it works: the self-deprecating exit makes it comfortable. Do not use this if the view was days ago.

Template 3: the post connection

Hi {first name}, I think you found me via the {topic} post. It touched a nerve with a few people at {sector} companies. Happy to send the longer version of the argument if it is useful.

Template 4: the multiple viewers

Hi {first name}, a couple of people at {company} have looked at what we do recently, so I thought I would reach out properly rather than wait. If {problem} is being discussed internally, I would be glad to help or get out of the way.

Why it works: it names the pattern honestly and offers to leave. If there is an internal conversation, this often gets a reply within the hour.

The rule

If you would not have messaged them without the view, the view is not a good enough reason. Run your viewer list against your ICP first and message the ones who would have been on your target list anyway. Everyone else is noise, and chasing noise is how you burn your daily connection limit on people who will never reply.

Frequently asked questions

Is a profile view actually a buying signal?

Weakly. Most views are idle curiosity, recruiters, or someone checking who commented on a post. It becomes meaningful when combined with something else: they are in your ICP, they viewed after you posted, or they viewed more than once.

Is it creepy to message someone who viewed you?

Only if you make it about the surveillance. Referencing it lightly and moving straight to something useful is fine. Leading with 'I noticed you looked at my profile' is not.

Do I need Premium to see who viewed?

For the full list, yes. Free accounts see a limited number, and viewers who browse in private mode are hidden regardless.
