Test 10: LinkedIn only against LinkedIn plus email

2023 to 2024, ten weeks, 9,020 prospects. The cheapest volume increase available to most teams.

In short: Adding email alongside LinkedIn lifted replies from 23.3 to 31.5 percent and meetings from 3.1 to 4.3 percent. Total reach went from 69 to 90 percent of the target list, carrying 41 percent more meetings.

Sample

2023 to 2024, ten weeks, 9,020 prospects, split at random inside each account. Mixed personas and company sizes.

Why it works

Most of this effect is reach, not persuasion. Roughly a third of any B2B list is unreachable on LinkedIn in a given campaign window: connection requests pending, dormant accounts, people who log in monthly. Email finds a good portion of them.

The second mechanism is repetition across contexts. The same message arriving in two places reads as a person following up. The same message arriving twice in one place reads as a sequence.

What it is not is a licence to double the volume. The teams that got the worst results from multichannel were the ones that treated email as a second list rather than a second door to the same person.

How to apply it

Same person, same thread of thought, different channel. The email should reference the LinkedIn message rather than restarting.

Space them. LinkedIn first, email three to four days later if there is no response, not the same afternoon.

Verify the email address. Bounce rates damage sending reputation in a way that carries across every campaign you run afterwards, which is a cost that will not show up in this test’s numbers.

What this test does not tell you

Ten weeks across mixed personas. The test does not separate the reach effect from the repetition effect, and most of the gain is likely to be reach, which means it will be smaller for teams whose lists are already highly connected on LinkedIn. Email deliverability varies enormously by sender setup and is not controlled for here.

Method

One variable at a time. A test alters a single element; if two things change we learn nothing. Prospects were split at random inside each client account, holding industry, geography, seniority and company size constant on both sides. No test was called below 2,000 prospects per arm, because outbound is noisy at low volume. Reply rate is reported as the leading indicator and meeting rate as the decision, because several variants lifted replies and produced no extra meetings at all, and those were not rolled out.

This test is one of fifteen in a dataset covering 389,890 prospects and 15,018 meetings across 41 client programmes and 17 clients, run between 2018 and 2026. The full set is on the 2026 outbound benchmarks page.

Frequently asked questions

Should you use email as well as LinkedIn for outbound?

On our data, yes. Adding email alongside LinkedIn lifted reply rate from 23.3 to 31.5 percent across 9,020 prospects, took total reach from 69 to 90 percent of the list, and produced 41 percent more meetings.

Why does adding email improve LinkedIn outreach?

Mostly reach. About a third of a typical B2B list is not reachable on LinkedIn inside a campaign window because of pending requests and dormant accounts. Email finds a good portion of them.

How reliable is this result?

Ten weeks across mixed personas. The test does not separate the reach effect from the repetition effect, and most of the gain is likely to be reach, which means it will be smaller for teams whose lists are already highly connected on LinkedIn. Email deliverability varies enormously by sender setup and is not controlled for here.
