2022, twelve weeks, 9,540 prospects. Enterprise accounts. Split at random inside each account.

Why it works

A question has a shape the reader can respond to. A statement about your company does not. Faced with a statement, the recipient has to invent both the relevance and the reason to reply, and most people will not do unpaid work for a stranger.

The gap is wider in enterprise than anywhere else, which is where this test ran. Enterprise buyers receive more company-led outbound than anyone, so the pattern is familiar enough to be filtered before the second line.

There is a compounding effect with the other findings. A question is naturally short, naturally specific, and naturally leaves out the pitch. Getting the question right tends to fix the length and the structure at the same time.

How to apply it

Make the last line of the message a question, and make it answerable in one sentence. How are you handling X at the moment is a good question. Would you be interested in learning how we help companies like yours is not.

Ask about the present, not the future. Questions about what they do today get answered. Questions about plans, priorities or roadmaps get ignored.

One question only. Two questions in a cold message reads as a survey.

What this test does not tell you

Enterprise only, and from 2022, which is the oldest test in the current set apart from the seniority test. The direction has held in everything we have run since, but the specific 10.8 percent floor for company-led copy is likely to be even lower now given the volume of automated outbound that has arrived since.

Method

One variable at a time. A test alters a single element; if two things change we learn nothing. Prospects were split at random inside each client account, holding industry, geography, seniority and company size constant on both sides. No test was called below 2,000 prospects per arm, because outbound is noisy at low volume. Reply rate is reported as the leading indicator and meeting rate as the decision, because several variants lifted replies and produced no extra meetings at all, and those were not rolled out.

This test is one of fifteen in a dataset covering 389,890 prospects and 15,018 meetings across 41 client programmes and 17 clients, run between 2018 and 2026. The full set is on the 2026 outbound benchmarks page.

Frequently asked questions

Should a cold outreach message ask a question?

Yes. Question-led copy replied at 33.2 percent against 10.8 percent for company-led copy across 9,540 enterprise prospects, and produced four and a half times the meetings.

What kind of question works best in cold outreach?

One about how they handle something today, answerable in a single sentence. Questions about the present get answered; questions about plans, priorities or roadmaps get ignored.

How reliable is this result?

Enterprise only, and from 2022, which is the oldest test in the current set apart from the seniority test. The direction has held in everything we have run since, but the specific 10.8 percent floor for company-led copy is likely to be even lower now given the volume of automated outbound that has arrived since.
