Expandi review: safe, mature, and showing its age in one place

Expandi has one of the best safety records in LinkedIn automation and a well-built sequence builder. Its famous personalisation trick is the part that's dated.

In short: Expandi is a mature, safe, feature-rich LinkedIn tool with the best conditional sequence builder in the category and strong agency features. Its differentiator, personalised images and GIFs, has lost most of its edge to familiarity. Around $99 per seat. Buy it for the sequencing and the safety record.

Disclosure: we build Prospectio, a competing product. Read accordingly.

What Expandi is

A cloud-based LinkedIn automation platform, launched 2019, aimed at growth teams and agencies. Its two signature features are smart sequences (branching campaign logic based on what the prospect does) and hyper-personalised images and GIFs.

What it does well

Smart sequences. This is the strongest part of the product. You can branch on almost anything: did they accept, did they reply, did they view your profile, did they engage with a post. If prospect behaviour should change what happens next, Expandi handles it more elegantly than anything else in the category.

Account safety. Dedicated IP per account, cloud-based, activity limits, warm-up. Expandi has taken safety seriously since launch and it shows in the community reputation. If your LinkedIn account is business-critical, this matters.

Agency features. Multiple accounts, whitelabel reporting, client management. A well-trodden path for lead-gen agencies.

Integrations and webhooks. Solid connections out to CRMs and automation platforms, so it fits into an existing stack.

Where it’s showing its age

The image personalisation. The coffee-cup-with-their-logo trick was clever. It got written up everywhere, which is exactly why it stopped working: prospects have seen it, and a personalised image from a stranger now reads as a tool rather than a person. It still lifts response in niches where buyers see little outbound. In competitive markets it does very little.

Still text-first. Underneath the images, the sequence is text. In our own controlled test, text-only first touch replied at 28.8 percent against 40.4 percent for a personalised video, regardless of how clever the merge fields are.

No qualification layer. Like most tools in the category, Expandi sends to whoever is on the list. The judgment about whether a prospect is worth messaging happens in your search filters, not in the tool.

No reply handling. Replies land in the inbox and wait for a human.

Pricing

Around $99 per seat per month at time of writing, with higher agency tiers. That puts it at the premium end of the sequencing tools and level with tools that do more per message.

Who should buy Expandi

  • Teams running properly complex conditional campaigns.
  • Agencies wanting whitelabel and multi-account management with a strong safety record.
  • Anyone who’s been burned by a restricted account and wants the careful option.

Who shouldn’t

  • Anyone whose core problem is reply rate rather than campaign logic.
  • Small teams who’ll never use the branching depth they’re paying for.

The verdict

A good, serious product that solves the 2021 version of the problem very well. If your sequences need to be smart, buy it. If your messages need to be human, look at what we do differently or the wider alternatives list.

Frequently asked questions

Is Expandi safe?

It's one of the safer options. Cloud-based with a dedicated IP per account, sensible limits and a long track record. No automation is risk-free, but Expandi has never been the tool that gets accounts restricted in bulk.

Does Expandi's image personalisation still work?

Less than it did. Putting a prospect's logo on a coffee cup was novel in 2021 and 2022 and lifted reply rates noticeably. Most B2B buyers have now seen it several times, and novelty is most of what made it work.

How much is Expandi?

Around $99 per seat per month at time of writing, with agency and whitelabel options above that. Check expandi.io.
