These group by the category of the product being sold, not by the prospect’s own industry. Each category has its own page with the sample size, the tests that matter most in that category, and who to target.
What the pattern says
Recognition beats education. Software development, coding tools and outsourcing sit at the top because the buyer knows what the problem is before they open the message. A message about delivery capacity or a hiring gap lands immediately. A message about a platform asks the reader to understand a category first, and a 420-character message is a bad place to teach anyone anything.
Crowded categories are harder. The two largest samples in the set, cloud platform at 117,000 prospects and CRM at 84,300, both booked at 3.5 percent, the joint lowest. These are mature categories where the buyer has already bought something, has an incumbent, and receives outbound about it every week.
The gap is smaller than you would expect. Top to bottom is 5.5 against 3.5 percent, a factor of 1.6. Compare that to the targeting test, where the same sequence produced 13.0 and 51.9 percent depending on how the list was built. Category matters less than how well you know the person you are writing to.
What to do if you are in a crowded category
Name the incumbent. Across 10,815 prospects, naming the prospect’s own product or a direct competitor took reply rate from 17.1 to 34.5 percent, and it works best exactly where the buyer already has something, which is the definition of a mature category.
