This is meeting rate, not reply rate. It counts a meeting from the point it was accepted in the client’s calendar, which is why it is a much smaller number than the reply-rate benchmarks published elsewhere in this category. Reply rate is a leading indicator. Meeting rate is the decision.

What the data says

Coding and developer tools book at 5.3 percent, second of twelve, on a small sample of 3,690 prospects. Read it as directional rather than precise: at that volume a couple of unusually good campaigns move the number.

Developer tools benefit from the same recognition effect as development services and add one of their own. The buyer is technical, evaluates quickly, and can often trial the product without involving anyone else, which shortens everything between first reply and first meeting.

The failure mode is writing to a developer audience the way you would write to a business buyer. Value propositions and ROI framing get discounted immediately. Name the stack, name the constraint, ask a technical question.

The spread from top to bottom is 5.5 against 3.5 percent, a factor of 1.6. Worth keeping in perspective: in the targeting test, the same sequence produced 13.0 and 51.9 percent reply rates depending only on how the list was built. Category matters less than how well you know the person you are writing to.

How this data was collected

3,690 prospects in this category, inside a dataset of 389,890 prospects and 15,018 meetings run for 17 clients across 41 programmes between 2018 and 2026. Prospects were split at random inside each client account for every controlled test, holding industry, geography, seniority and company size constant on both sides, and no test was called below 2,000 prospects per arm.

One thing to hold in mind. The category is the seller’s, not the prospect’s: it describes what our client sells rather than what the person receiving the message does. The breakdowns by who was contacted are on the persona, company size and region pages.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good meeting rate for coding and developer tools outbound?

5.3% in our dataset, from 3,690 prospects contacted, which ranks 2nd of twelve categories. The cross-category average is 3.9%. Note that this is meeting rate, not reply rate: it counts meetings accepted in the client's calendar, so it is a much smaller number than the reply figures most benchmark reports publish.

Does cold outreach work for coding and developer tools?

It produced 53 meetings per thousand prospects contacted across 3,690 prospects in our programmes. Whether that works for you depends on your deal size: at a €20,000 average deal that is €1,060,000 of pipeline per thousand contacted, and at €80,000 it is four times that.

Is this the buyer's industry or the seller's?

The seller's. These categories describe what our clients sell, not what their prospects do. If you want the breakdown by who is being contacted, the persona, company size and region pages carry that.

How was this measured?

From 3,690 prospects in this category inside a dataset of 389,890 prospects and 15,018 meetings across 41 client programmes and 17 clients between 2018 and 2026. A meeting counts when it was accepted in the client's calendar.
